Campground Review #59: Beaver Creek State Park in East Liverpool, Ohio

On this episode of Campground of the Week, Janine Pettit of GirlCamper.com gives us a campground review of Beaver Creek State Park in East Liverpool, Ohio.

Beaver Creek State Park is located just miles from the western Pennsylvania border in eastern Ohio, so this is a great campground to visit if you are traveling across Route 80. Beaver Creek State Park offers easy access to Pittsburgh and Youngstown as well.

Beaver Creek State Park is the perfect opportunity to do some ‘real’ camping, as the majority of sites are primitive and the the campground only offers pit toilets. Listen to the episode to hear Janine describe both her nervousness about visiting and her experience roughing it. There are not even any showers at Beaver Creek State Park…however, the camp host will warm up some water in a solar bag so you can enjoy rinsing off at the end of the day.

The campground uses ReserveAmerica.com to handle reservations, and in addition to about 50 campsites for tenters and RVers, there is also an entire section reserved for visitors trailering horses. The campsites vary in size and length, so make sure you check that information before booking a site.

Cheyenne State Park campground is not very big, with just about 50 RV sites and 10 walk-in tent sites. That means Cheyenne State Park fills up fast, so if you want your choice of sites and dates, book six months in advance at ReserveAmerica.com. That’s not surprising considering the full-hook up sites are an affordable $28/night. You will have to purchase a daily Colorado State Park Pass however, so consider getting an annual pass if you will be doing a lot of Colorado state park camping over the course of the year.

Campground Review #57 Cherry Hill Park in College Park, Maryland near Washington DC

This campground is their preferred choice for exploring the amazing city of Washington DC, and they highly recommend it as an “Urban Basecamp”, a campground that gives you easy access to a great American city.

Cherry Hill park is located within a highly urban area, so campers need to be prepared for some road noise. The tradeoff is that you are under 30 minutes from the major attractions in Washington DC. You also have access to DCs public transportation system–there is a bus stop within the campground that will take you to the Metro, and Metro cards are available for sale in the camp store. That’s about as easy as it gets!

Campground Review #56 Indiana Dunes State Park in Chesterton, Indiana

Indiana Dunes State Park is also a great alternative to camping at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore (Dunewood Campground) just up the road. Dunewood Campground only has primitive sites and they are all first come/first serve. At Indiana Dunes State Park, you are just minutes away from the National Lakeshore and you can reserve electric sites–even 50 amp!!!–in advance. Plus the state park is open year round.

Campground Review #54 Devils Tower KOA in Devils Tower, Wyoming

Campground Review #53 Mosca Campground in San Luis State Park, Colorado

On this episode of Campground of the Week, we welcome guest correspondent Scott Elias to review Mosca Campground at San Luis State Park in the great state of Colorado. Scott Elias is a former educator who now works for Apple. He grew up camping, but his wife didn’t so it took some convincing to get her and the family on board with the RV dream. Scott must be convincing, though, because now they have a brand new Jayco Whitehawk and are spending as many weekends as possible exploring their beautiful home state.

Mosca Campground is located in the high mountain valley between the San Juan and Sangre de Cristo mountain ranges. It is only 15 miles west of Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, so it makes a perfect base camp for exploring that NPS site.

Timberlane is a private, family-owned campground and offers a surprising amount of natural beauty considering its proximity to the City of Brotherly Love. The amenities are not fancy, and some things could use updating, but they are sufficient for relaxing after a long day of enjoying the food and historical sites that Philadelphia has in spades.

Campground Review #51 Buffalo Campground in Island Park, Idaho outside the West Gate of Yellowstone National Park

On this episode of Campground of the Week, Brett Neilson of OurCampingAdventures.com reviews Buffalo Campground in Island Park, Idaho. This campground is a favorite for the Neilson family, and they use it as a base camp for exploring Yellowstone National Park, since it is just 30 minutes from the West Gate.

Natural beauty and affordability are the stars of the show at Buffalo Campground. Campsites are surrounded by a dense forest of lodgepole pines, and the beautiful Buffalo River runs through the park. Fishing is said to be great here, but Brett can’t attest to that himself.

Individual sites are a bargain, running from $15-$20. There are a variety of configurations–pull thrus, back ins, double sites, and group camping areas. In this episode, Brett lays out the pros and cons of all of them.
